It was 12 below zero this morning and we went up to Hatcher Pass yesterday and today. There was about two feet of snow in one layer that adhered well to the ground, so there was no avalanche danger. Hundreds of telemark skiers, touring skiers, snowboarders, and alpine skiers were up there skiing pretty much everything that was possible to hike to. There were tracks coming down from Government Peak, Hatch Peak, and all the ridgelines in the first two lines of mountains. On Saturday, on the picture on the left, we hiked most of the way to the top of the ridge by climbing up the spine halfway between the two peaks, then skiied down the spine a little way, traversed through the chute on the left and skiied down the big face below the cliffs. On Sunday we climbed to the top of the ridgeline that eventually winds its way up another 1,000 feet or so to Hatch Peak. Since it was ten below zero the powder was the lightest and dryest powder I have ever skiied.
