Bicycling to Independence Mine
![]() |
Decided to try something a little different: a hill climb on my
mountain bike with 3,000 feet of elevation gain. This one is looking up towards my eventual
destination. |

The Little Susitna River at the so called gateway to Hatcher
Pass. The climbing starts here. |

At the hairpin by the Motherlode Lodge which can only
mean one thing... |

...Time to really start climbing. |

Looking South at Pioneer Peak from 16-mile. |

Going around the corner into upper Fishhook Valley |

Finally at Independence Mine, 3000 feet above my starting
point. To be honest, this ride was a lot more difficult than I thought it would be. The last
1,000 or so feet of vertical tested my resolve to say the least. But now that I'm up here,
time to go for a hike. |

I went up Gold Cord Peak a little ways. This is looking towards
Microdot and the Rae Wallace chutes. The terrain on the upper mountain is pretty rough, and
seeing as how I was by myself and essentially had no gas left in the tank I went halfway up
and just chilled there for a while, eating lunch and even laying down for a little rest. |

Looking South down Fishhook Valley. Independence Mine directly
below and Skyscraper is the big looking mountain on the right. |
