The Scarlet Letter - Hester had it coming. What a slut. Her husband sent her ahead to America and the first thing she does upon arrival is have sex with the local puritan minister. Victim, yeah right.
The Grapes of Wrath - What a bunch of Okie trailer trash.
The Old Man and The Sea - A good story about a guy catching a fish. I refuse to recognize any symbolism or allegory and maintain that the story is just about a man and a big fish.
Moby Dick - Contrary to popular belief, the bulk of the book is about whaling expeditions and whaling philosophy. The crazy guy Ahab seeking revenge doesn't really come into play until the very end, though it is enjoyable when it does happen. If there's one thing I identify with, it's insane people seeking vengeance. Anyway, this book dashed my hopes of writing a great American novel; if it took me nearly two years to read one, writing one would take several lifetimes.
